Should the Tennessee Titans Sign These Free Agent Quarterbacks?

The Tennessee Titans are potentially in desperate need for a quarterback this offseason, likely with the first overall pick; however, there are a number of veteran options for the Titans in free agency.

Justin Fields - 1 year, $8 million

Justin Fields was the 11th pick in the 2021 NFL draft, and has never quite lived up to expectations. After a few subpar seasons with the Chicago Bears, Fields was traded to the steelers where he played in six games before backing up Russell Wilson. Fields is the youngest, cheapest, and highest upside quarterback in this free agency class, and showed a lot of potential in his few games with the Steelers this past season, leading them to a 4-2 start in his six games. The steelers have expressed interest in keeping the young quarterback, however, so Fields may not end up being an option.

Russell Wilson - 2 years, $80 million

Yikes! Expensive! I don't presume Wilson will be able to get this fat projected contract, however teams will go crazy for a veteran future hall of famer. Wilson was the other quarterback on the Steelers, and led them to a playoff birth. Wilson, however, was subpar. After getting the starting job in week 7, Wilson started hot winning 5 of his first 6 games, throwing Pittsburgh way into a playoff spot. After his crazy start, however, Wilson came back to earth losing five straight to end the regular season and then having their hopes and dreams crushed in the first round of the playoffs. Wilson's career is on its last legs and, despite being a decent option, will not be worth a massive contract and a rookie quarterback will be a much better option.

Kirk Cousins - N/A

It's hard to find a projection for Kirk as he hasn't officially been released , however it can be assumed it'll be pricy. In 2024, the Atlanta Falcons gave Kirk a massive 4 year, $180 million dollar contract. Shortly after this blockbuster contract, the Falcons selected Michael Penix Jr. in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft, shocking the world. The expectation was that captain Kirk would lead the team to the playoffs while also helping mentor the young quarterback. This did not go as planned, however, as the Falcons went 8-9 and missed the playoffs while benching Kirk and eventually announcing their desire to move on from him. This may be a cut or a trade, but over all he will be pricy and a bridge quarterback at best due to his age and fragile nature.

Aaron Rodgers - N/A

The planned release was only announced a couple days ago, so projections are hard to find, but Rodgers is getting released from the Jets, the experiment is over. Rodgers had a mediocre season with the Jets this past season and only managed to win 5 games with a talented roster around him. Rodgers plans to play this next season, however, I would not take him unless he was cheap. He could make an excellent mentor to a young quarterback if the Titans sign him, and even has a house in Tennessee, so the possibility is there. Out of all free agents this guy seems the most possible to be a bridge quarterback.

Sam Darnold - 3 years, $120 million

This is a rough one. Sam Darnold had extremely low expectations coming into the 2024 season, only getting the job with the injury of first round draft pick J.J McCarthy. Darnold, however, proved everyone wrong. 4300 yards, 35 touchdowns, and only 12 interceptions while leading the Vikings to 14-3 record. Near the end of the season the wheels fell off though. In the final regular season game, while fighting for the first seed in the AFC, the Vikings got blown out 31-9, and Darnold was abysmal. This was followed up by a 27-9 first round exit against the Las Angeles Rams in which Darnold had another rough game. The Vikings have a great system and so many weapons that likely made Darnold look much better than he is, however I believe he is a starting level quarterback. Darnold will get a massive bag, but the Titans should not be the one to give him it.
