Could The Titans Sign Kyle Pitts In Free Agency?
It is almost the NFL offseason which means everybody is doing their research on players on potential upcoming free agents.
One of the positions the Tennessee Titans will likely look at in march is the tight end position. With Chigoziem Okonkwo set to be a free agent with what appears to be no progress in an extension, this leaves Gunnar Helm as the lone tight end on the roster.
While Gunnar Helm looked like a solid player in his rookie season, the team will need another tight end to pair with him.
One of the top options is 2021 4th overall pick Kyle Pitts.
Pitts is only 25 years old and, while he has had an underwhelming career for someone who looked like a potential generational prospect, he has shown flashes of being a top tight end in the league.
As a rookie, Pitts surpassed 1000 yards on 68 catches while hauling in a touchdown. More recenly, he posted 11 catches, 166 yards and 3 touchdowns in a late season game against the Tampa Bay Buccanneers on Thursday Night Football.
While he has showcased a lot of potential, Pitts more than likely won't be looked at for Tennessee.
Pitts is similar to Chig Okonwko, both being receiving tight ends that don't show much talent blocking. If the Titans wanted this tight end type, they would likely give Chig an extension as he will likely be a cheaper contract and is already familiar with Tennessee.
Additionally, a Pitts and Helm pairing may not make the most sense. New offensive coordinator Brian Daboll generally prefers versatile tight ends that can contribute in both receiving and blocking. While Helm and Pitts are both versatile, neither is a great blocker. If the Titans want Gunnar Helm to be their main receiving tight end for the future, they will likely look at one that is a much better blocker while also being able to receive.
This draft class is also fairly deep with tight end talent, with many solid day 3 prospects and some that are also good in the 2nd-3rd round, such as Eli Stowers.
While Pitts would be an electric pickup for the Titans, he does not fit and would be more expensive then similiar options. I really just still want Chig back.
