Tennessee Titans hire Chiefs assistant GM Mike Borgonzi: Everything you need to know.

The Tennessee Titans officially announced Friday, January 17th, that they have signed Mike Borgonzi to fill their coveted General Manager job. This job opened after the controversial firing of 2nd year General Manager Ran Carthon, whom many Titans fans believed had done a great job of obtaining talent. On January 7th, 2024, controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk stated that "our football team hasn't improved over the past two years" and that she is "Deeply disappointed in our poor win-loss record during this period." Since the hiring of Ran Carthon in January of 2023, the Titans have been a gruesome 9-25, coming in at a 26% win percentage. This is piled onto the fact that the Titans were the worst team in the 2024 season, earning the first overall pick in this upcoming draft. Amy Adams Strunk wanted a change before this potential turning point in the franchise.

Mike Borgonzi has been a part of the Kansas City Chiefs organization for the past 16 seasons, being the Manager of Football Operations in 2010, Pro Personnel scout in 2011-2012, Assistant Director of Pro Scouting in 2013-2014, Co-Director of Player Personnel in 2015-2016, Director of Player personnel in 2017, Director of Football Operations in 2018-2020, before becoming the Assistant General Manager in 2021. In Borgonzi's 16 year stint with the Chiefs, they have been led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes II to 4 time AFC Champions, and three time superbowl winners.

Since becoming the Assistant GM in 2021, Borgonzi has been a part of draft picks such as star linebacker Nick Bolton, 3x pro bowler and multiple time all pro center Creed Humphrey, pro bowl offensive lineman Trey smith (who was a 6th round pick), Multiple time all pro cornerback Trent McDuffie, star pass rusher George Karlaftis, star linebacker Leo Chenal, superstar running back Isiah Pacheco (who was a 7th round pick), NFL rookie record for receptions in the postseason wide reciever Rashee Rice, and star rookie wide reciever Xavier Worthy. In the past four draft classes, Kansas City has gotten talent all across the board from their first round picks to their seventh round pick, Borgonzi has experience building a winning team through the draft, something former Titans General Managers Ran Carthon and Jon Robinson have failed to do.

Chiefs General Manager Brett Veach released a statement Saturday that Mike has "An incredible Football mind, he's detailed in his work, and he understands the ins and outs of the draft, free agency, building an NFL roster, and managing the salary cap." He then ends the statement by saying, "The Titans made an outstanding hire."

The Tennessee Titans and Kansas Chiefs have completed two major trades over the past year and Borgonzi was a facilitater in them both. The first being the trade for L'Jarius Sneed in March of last year, where the titans traded a 2025 3rd round pick, which is now pick 65, as well as a 2024 7th round pick swap. The second being the trade in which the Titans sent star wide reciever DeAndre Hopkins to the Kansas City Chiefs to help them compete for a third straight superbowl. The Chiefs compensated the Titans with a 2025 conditional 5th round pick, that could become a 4th if the Chiefs reach the superbowl and if Hopkins plays 60% of snaps.

Mike Borgonzi has gained respect all across the NFL landscape over the last 16 seasons and became one of the top GM candidates for the upcoming season. Now he is faced with an impossible decision of what to do with the first overall pick, and what he chooses to do with this pick may be a key contributer to if Borgonzi lives out his full 5-year contract in Tennessee.
