Femi Oladejo Could Have A Great New Role In Robert Saleh's Defense

With the 52nd overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft, the Tennessee Titans selected edge rusher Oluwafemi Oladejo out of UCLA. Through one season this pick has been controversial, as Femi struggled in his time playing in his rookie season, before suffering a leg injury that would end his season prematurely.

Out of college, Oladejo had incredible physical metrics that helped him be drafted so highly. He is a big, strong, defensive end that still managed to post a 4.70 40-yard dash, showcasing an impressive combination of size and strength that should, in theory, translate well to the NFL.

There was one glaring issue with this pick that worried fans though: he was a project. Before the 2024 seasons, which would be his final one in college, Femi switched positions to be a defensive end. Before this, he played as a middle linebacker.

The play with the draft pick was that, if they could properly develop the young player, he could become a great edge with his strength, size, and speed. Through one season that did no translate, as the most he managed to do was make a couple of tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

With the change of coaching in Tennessee, Oladejo could perhaps see a bit of a shift in his position.

Robert Saleh utilizes a 4-3 scheme, meaning there are 3 linebackers. This means there will often be usage of all three linebacker types: the SAM (strong side), MIKE (middle), and WILL (weak side).

In Saleh's defense, the SAM often functions as a hybrid player that uses their pass rush capabilities because the defense frequently shifts into a nickel package, meaning there are five defensive backs. This requires the SAM linebacker to act as an edge rusher on these plays.

This role fits perfectly for Oladejo who has experience in pass coverage in his time as a middle linebacker across his collegiate career, which is needed for a strong side linebacker as the line up across from, and often cover, the tight end position, as well as running backs.

His year in college and year as a pro being an edge rusher will be beneficial for when he shifts to being a pass rusher.

Saleh requires an athletic, versatile player to be able to do both jobs that a SAM must be capable of, and Oladejo should be able to set the edge against the run and rush the passer.

This fit could be great for Femi to breakout as a player and use his skillset.
