Tennessee Titans Fire Brian Callahan; Name Mike McCoy Interim Head Coach

The Tennessee Titans did the inevitable by firing head coach Brian Callahan on Monday, October 13th. This comes after one of the most disasterous tenures an NFL head coach has ever seen, going 4-19 across a season and a half.

The team put out a statement from President of Football Operations Chad Brinker, stating:

"After extended conversations with our owner and general manager, we met with Brian Callahan morning to tell him we are making a change at head coach. These decisions are never easy, and they become more difficult when they involve people of great character. We are grateful for Brian's investment in the Titans and Tennessee community during his tenure as head coach. We thank him and his family for being exemplary ambassadors of the Tennessee Titans.

While we are committed to a patient and strategic plan to build a sustainable, winning football program, we have not demonstrated sufficient growth. Our players, fans, and community deserve a football team that achieves a standard we are not currently meeting, and we are committed to making the hard decisions necessary to reach and maintain that standard."

The plan a few weeks before the termination of Callahan was to keep him until the end of the season and make a decision from there, but there seems to have been more of a mess made since then. This was made clear by star defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, where he stated "It started at practice. Just being honest? This was probably one of our worst weeks at practice." This is the opposite of what you would expect and like to see after the team won their first contest of the season against the Arizona Cardinals.

When a coach looses the locker room there is left very little they can do to keep their job for the future, and Callahan lost the locker room very early on this season. It was with best interest in mind for Cam Ward, the fans, and the future of this football team to move on from this head coach when they did.

A few hours after firing Callahan, it was revealed that senior offensive assistant Mike McCoy would take on the role of interim head coach. It isn't a flashy choice, but McCoy has experience coaching a football team.

McCoy was the head coach of the San Diego Chargers from 2013 - 2016, where he would have a playoff birth and win while finishing with a 28-38 record. After being fired the team announced their move to Los Angeles, making him the last coach of the San Diego Chargers.

McCoy may not be the best and flashiest choice to be the interim head coach, but he more than has the ability to coach a team and help develop the young players, which is all the team

needs to focus on while considering their head coach for the 2026 season.
