On Monday, January 20th, the Tennessee Titans hired a brand new special teams coordinator John Fassel. After a horrific 2024 season on special teams, head coach Brian Callahan is opting for a change: Colt Anderson is out. Tennessee had the worst special team DVOA in the nfl according to fntfantasy.com, and allowed countless large punt and kick returns through the 17 game season, as well as still giving up a blocked punt, a problem that has carried over from the 2023 nfl season, and was a key reason to the teams week one loss to the Chicago Bears.
This firing leaves Titans fans rejoiced as Colt Anderson was a heavy topic of conversation the second half of the saeson. The titans couldn't seem to stop opposing teams from having massive returns on punts and kicks, all the way through their final game against the Texans where they opened the game with a large kick return and a quick score. Titans fans don't often agree on things but the firing of Colt Anderson was one that almost every single one wanted.
John "Bones" Fassel is a huge pickup by head coach Brian Callahan. With 16 years of special teams experience with the Cowboys, Raiders, Rams, and Ravens, and consistently ranks within the top 10 in special teams units. Bones was also an interim head coach for the Rams after the firing of Jeff Fisher.
Bones has coached some of the top special teams players of the last two decades, including kickers Sebastion Janikowski, Greg Zuerlein, and rising star Brandon Aubrey; punters such as Shane Lechler, and Johny Hekker; and even has coached stellar long snappers such as Jos Condo and Jake McQuaide. Bones should pair really well with Titans star punter Ryan Stonehouse and multiple time pro bowl long snapper Morgan Cox, as well as whatever direction the team decides to take for the kicker position this year.
Fassel became avaliable to explore options after the firing of Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, who was let go after little success in his tenure. Bones was one of the most coveted special teams coordinators and has been described as one of the most creative coordinators in the league.
The firing and coincidal hiring by head coach Brian Callahan speaks to his ability to admit mistakes and learn and improve from them. He managed to upgrade from a bottom tier staff member to a veteran and all time great.
